What to do

This is an earth fault, and it is worth knowing why it is hard to find so you are not surprised by the bill for looking.

Electricity has to get back to the battery, and the return path for this module has gone high-resistance. The catch is that it measures perfectly with an ordinary meter — the fault only shows when current is actually flowing. Finding it means a voltage-drop test under load, not a continuity check, and that takes time.

Have the battery terminals and the main earth straps cleaned and retightened first. They are free to do and they are frequently the whole answer.

Mention any accident repair, welding, or carpet that has been wet. Earth points bolt to the body behind trim and under carpet, and a repair that painted over one — or damp that corroded it — is exactly how this happens.

What this code means

The control module's earth circuit B is faulty.

This range is different from every other network family, and the difference decides how it should be diagnosed.

U01xx and U02xx say a module went silent. U04xx and U05xx say a module is talking nonsense about something it watches. This range says a module is reporting a problem with its own foundations — its supply, its earth, or the ignition state that tells it whether the car is even meant to be awake.

Which makes these codes upstream of almost everything else. A module with a marginal earth does not fail cleanly; it reports implausible values about every sensor it reads, sets codes in unrelated systems, and drops off the bus intermittently. A scan tool showing thirty codes across five systems very often has one of these underneath it.

So read this family first and fix it first. Clearing a page of downstream codes before the supply fault is repaired produces a page of downstream codes again by the end of the week.

And start with the battery, genuinely. Not as a formality — a twelve-volt battery weak enough to sag during cranking, or a terminal with corrosion under a clamp that looks tight, reproduces this entire family exactly. It is the cheapest thing to eliminate and by some distance the most common cause.

An earth fault is the hardest electrical problem to find and the easiest to dismiss, because everything measures fine until it is under load.

Current has to return. A module's earth strap carries everything that module draws back to the battery, and corrosion in that path adds resistance that only shows when current flows — the connection reads zero ohms with a meter and drops half a volt with the module working.

The measurement that actually finds it is voltage drop under load, not continuity. Anything above a couple of tenths of a volt between the module's earth and the battery negative, with the system running, is the fault.

Where they fail is predictable: earth points bolted to the body behind trim, under carpets that have been wet, in wheel arches, and anywhere a repair has painted over a bolted joint. Accident repair is a classic trigger — a body shop that bolts an earth strap onto fresh paint has made a connection that looks perfect and conducts badly.

Multiple earths on one module follow the same logic as multiple supplies: a clean, low-current earth for the electronics and its sensor references, and a separate heavy one for output drivers. The letter says which has degraded, and the two produce different symptoms.

A degraded signal earth is the more insidious of the two. Sensor voltages are measured against it, so a shifted earth shifts every reading that module takes — and the car reports a page of sensors that are all slightly wrong while every one of them is perfectly good. That is the single most expensive misdiagnosis this range produces.
