PSA's stronger five-speed manual transaxle — the BE3's successor rather than its sibling, drawn for torque the BE3 was not rated for, and fitted across the group behind the 1.6 HDi and the larger petrol engines.
In Iran it is the Runna's gearbox, and that is what separates the Runna from the Peugeot 206 it is built on. The 206 uses PSA's smaller MA transaxle; the Runna does not. A parts list or a repair procedure written for an IKCO 206 is therefore the wrong document for a Runna even though the two cars share a platform and an engine — which is the single most useful thing to know about this unit here.
Everything the BE3 page says about a transaxle applies unchanged: one case, one oil, the differential inside the gearbox, and a noise that follows road speed telling you something different from one that follows engine speed. The two units are close enough in layout that a workshop at home in one is not lost in the other. What differs is the rating, and that is the whole reason PSA drew it.
Do not read that resemblance as interchangeability. The BE3 and the BE4 are separate part numbers with separate ratios, and PSA's own variant markings — the 5 that counts the speeds, and the R suffix — are cast into the housing rather than recorded anywhere on the car's paperwork. Identify the unit on the unit.
