Also known as: intech, in-tech, 4.6 dohc, modular dohc

Ford's double-overhead-cam Modular V8 — the InTech — in the Lincoln Continental, Mark VIII, LS and Aviator, and the Mercury Marauder.

It is the same family as the Triton and a quite different engine. The Triton in the trucks is single-cam with two or three valves; this is four valves and two cams per bank, and it shares a bore spacing with its truck relative and very little else. Parts listings routinely conflate them, and the tell is the cam cover: a DOHC engine has two per side.

⚑ It does NOT have the Triton's spark-plug problems. The four-valve heads use a conventional plug with proper thread depth, so neither the plug ejection nor the two-piece broken-plug story applies here — which is worth stating plainly, because those are the first things a search for Ford Modular V8 returns.

Its own recurring items are the timing chain tensioners and guides, giving a rattle on a cold start, and — on the higher-mileage cars — the intake manifold, whose plastic coolant crossover cracks. The symptom is coolant loss with no external leak until it is sudden, and it is a known part rather than a mystery.

6 generations, across 3 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
