The petrol half of Honda's IMA hybrid — the 1.3 LDA and 1.5 LEA — in the Insight, Civic Hybrid, Jazz and CR-Z, plus the three-cylinder ECA1 in the first Insight and the V6 JNA1 in the Accord Hybrid.
⚑ IMA is a single thin motor between the engine and the gearbox, and that is the whole architecture: the engine always drives the wheels. There is no series mode and no engine-off driving worth the name. It is the opposite of the two-motor e:HEV that replaced it, and advice written for one describes the other badly.
The battery pack is what these cars are known for. Capacity fades with age and heat, and the symptom is not a warning light first — it is reduced assist, worse economy and an engine that runs more often. Owners frequently describe that as an engine fault.
The engine underneath is a conventional small Honda four with conventional faults, and the LDA runs a lean-burn strategy in some markets that makes it more sensitive to a tired oxygen sensor than a normal engine would be.
A start, stop or charging complaint belongs to the system, not to this engine, and diagnosing it at the engine is looking in the wrong half of the car.
