Honda Insight

Three quite different hybrids under one name, and which one matters enormously. The 1999 Insight is an aluminium two-seater with the IMA mild hybrid — a motor sandwiched between engine and gearbox that assists but cannot drive the car alone. The 2009 car is a conventional five-door with the same IMA idea. The 2018 car uses i-MMD, where the engine is usually a generator and the wheels are driven electrically. So an Insight can be a mild hybrid or a series hybrid depending on nothing but its age, and IMA battery degradation is the classic complaint on the first two.
