Hyundai's first modern common-rail diesel — the 2.0 D4EA and 2.2 D4EB — in the Santa Fe, Tucson, Sportage, Trajet and Carens.
⚑ It is not the R-family that replaced it, which is the distinction that matters: both wear the CRDi badge, both are 2.0 or 2.2 litres, both appear in the same models a generation apart, and almost nothing about them is shared. hyundai-r-family is the later engine's page.
Its known items are the turbocharger and the EGR. The variable-geometry turbocharger's vanes carbon up and stick, giving overboost or underboost codes and a limp mode that clears on a restart; the EGR valve carbons shut. Both respond to cleaning more often than to replacement.
Injector seals leak combustion gases up around the injector body and carbon the seat, which makes removal a job in itself and is worth knowing before a price is quoted.
On early cars there is no particulate filter at all, which removes the commonest modern diesel complaint and is worth establishing before diagnosing one.
