AvtoVAZ's 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol fours — the engines of the Granta, Kalina, Vesta and Niva Travel, and descendants of the long-running VAZ engine line that began with the Fiat-derived designs of the 1970s.
They are belt-driven, port-injected, and deliberately simple, built to be repairable with basic equipment in places far from a franchised dealer. That shapes the diagnostic approach: codes are few and general, and physical testing — compression, vacuum, ignition — is the method rather than a fallback.
The timing belt is the item that decides an engine's fate, and whether a given VAZ engine is an interference design or not varies by version, which is the first thing to establish before advising an owner on risk. The 16-valve engines are generally interference; some 8-valve variants are not. Getting that wrong in either direction gives an owner badly wrong advice about a snapped belt.
