PSA's small indirect-injection diesel — the TUD — in the Saxo, 106, ZX and the Peugeot 205 and 306 beside them.
It is the diesel member of the TU petrol family, sharing the block architecture, and that is the useful route in: TU material often describes the same castings, while the injection system is entirely its own.
⚑ It is not the XUD, and the two are confused constantly. The XUD is the larger 1.7 and 1.9, has its own page here, and shares no parts. A search that returns XUD results for a TUD5 question is returning the wrong engine.
Everything about it is mechanical — a rotary injection pump, no rail, no electronics to interrogate. Diagnosis is compression, glow plugs, pump timing and injector nozzles, and a scan tool contributes nothing.
It is belt-driven and it is an interference design. On cars this old the belt history is usually unknown, which is the single question worth answering before any other work.
Its reputation is for very long life at modest output, and most survivors are tired rather than faulty.
