Tata's own two diesel families of the Sierra, Sumo and Safari era — and they are two engines of different size on one page, which is the first thing to establish. The 483 is 1,948 cc; the 497 is 2,956 cc and came from the Tata 407 light truck. They share a numbering convention and nothing else.
483 DL is indirect injection with a pre-chamber at 63 hp; 483 DLTC is that engine turbocharged from 1997 — DLTC is Tata for diesel turbocharged — at 87 to 90 hp. It is a Tata-built stroked XUD9, so PSA XUD material describes it, and it is a different block from the XD88 that preceded it at the same 1,948 cc, which has its own page here.
497 SP is the 3.0 direct-injection four, naturally aspirated at 65 hp, turbocharged as 497 SPTC at 70 hp and 223 Nm, and finally common-railed at 85 hp and 250 Nm. aspiration is left open because the page spans all of that.
⚑ CR4 is deliberately not an alias here. Tata puts that badge on this 3.0 and on the Indica's 1.4, so the token names two engines and therefore names none — a search for it would answer one owner's question with the other's engine. The badge is recorded in the rows' notes instead.
They are mechanical engines built for load and bad roads, and most survivors have worked hard. Wear rather than failure is the normal finding, and the parts supply in India remains good.
