Volvo S80

The large saloon before the S90, and the model with the widest engine spread Volvo has offered — including a 4.4 V8 built by Yamaha and a transverse straight-six, both unusual layouts for a front-driven car and both cramped enough that access dominates the labour on any repair. The five-cylinder D5 diesel is the European volume engine, and its swirl-flap linkage and turbocharger actuator are the two items behind most of its power-loss complaints.
