Fiat Firefly (GSE)

Fiat's small petrol family since 2016 — the Firefly, internally GSE — in the 500, Panda, Tipo, 500X, Renegade and the Lancia Ypsilon, as a 1.0 three-cylinder and a 1.3 four, naturally aspirated and turbocharged.

⚑ It is not the FIRE, and this catalogue's own alias search proposed merging them because one name extends the other. They share three letters and nothing else: the FIRE is the 1980s eight-valve family that ran for thirty years, and the Firefly is a clean-sheet replacement with a different block, different head and different service requirements. A prefix is not a family, and this is the case that proves it here.

Its defining service item is the timing belt, and the detail matters: on several versions the belt runs in oil, like PSA's PureTech — which shortens its real life well below the stated interval and makes the oil specification part of the belt's maintenance rather than separate from it. A wet belt that has been run on the wrong oil is the failure that ends these engines.

The 1.0 turbo's other recurring item is the water pump, which on some versions is belt-driven inside the engine for the same reason — so a coolant loss with no visible leak is a reason to look at the belt housing rather than the hoses.
