D-4D is a badge, not an engine — Toyota's name for a common-rail direct-injection diesel, which by now describes every diesel it sells.
Our rows show it across eight models, covering the 1ND, 1CD, 2AD, 1KD, 2KD, 1AD and GD families — from a 1.4 three-cylinder to a 3.0 four, in cars as different as a Yaris and a Hilux.
Establish the code, which Toyota stamps on the block and which every technical source uses.
⚑ Two faults in this family are worth naming because they are era-defining rather than model-specific:
- The
2AD-FTV's cylinder head cracking, on the 2.2 in the Avensis, RAV4 and Verso of the late 2000s. Toyota extended the warranty on it, which is the strongest available evidence about the cause, and the symptom is coolant loss with no external leak — the same picture as a head gasket on any engine. - The
1KDand2KD's injector and piston problems in the Hilux, where injector deposits raise combustion temperatures until the piston crown erodes. The tell is a knock under load and rising oil consumption, and it is progressive rather than sudden.
Both are what the badge cannot tell you, and both are the reason the code matters more than the badge on a Toyota diesel.
