The estate version of the Prius, sold as the Prius α in Japan and the Prius+ in Europe, sharing the third-generation Prius's 2ZR-FXE and transaxle almost entirely — so Prius material of those years covers the powertrain. The battery is where they diverge, and it matters. The five-seat cars carry the familiar nickel-metal-hydride pack; the seven-seat versions use a lithium-ion pack mounted in the centre console instead, because the nickel pack would not fit under the extra row. Two different chemistries, two different cooling arrangements and two different sets of battery codes under one name, so establishing seat count before diagnosing a hybrid battery fault is not a formality.
