Toyota's 3.4 twin-turbo V6 — in the Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX and LS, and as the i-FORCE MAX in hybrid form.
It replaced a naturally aspirated V8 in vehicles that tow, which is the context for everything written about it: owners compare it against an engine with a thirty-year record, and it has four.
It is too new for a settled fault pattern, and saying so is more useful than repeating early-adopter forum reports. What is established is a manufacturing recall on early Tundra and LX engines — machining debris left in the block, causing bearing failure — which Toyota addressed by replacing engines. A car of those years should be checked against the campaign by VIN, and that is a documentary question rather than a diagnostic one.
What can be said from the design: twin turbochargers and direct injection mean inlet-valve carbon is a maintenance item, and the oil is doing turbo bearing duty as well as engine duty — so the interval matters more than it did on the V8 this replaced, particularly on a vehicle that tows.
The two sizes below are one engine. Toyota badges this 3,444 cc V6 as 3.4 in North America — i-FORCE MAX in the Tundra, Sequoia and LX — and as 3.5 elsewhere, in the Land Cruiser 300 and the LS 500. Nothing mechanical separates them, so a bulletin written for one applies to the other, and a search for the wrong number finds nothing.
