The diesel half of Volvo's modular Drive-E family — the same 2.0-litre block as the petrol B4204T, sold as D3, D4 and D5, and the engine that ended Volvo's five-cylinder diesels.
The D5 of this family is twin-turbocharged and the D4 is not, which is the first thing to establish on a boost complaint: they are not the same installation, and a procedure written for one does not describe the other. Volvo's PowerPulse system on later D5s stores compressed air to spin the turbine off idle, and it is a component that can fail on its own while the turbochargers are healthy.
The recurring item is the internal wet timing belt driving the oil pump — the same arrangement, and the same consequences, as Ford's and PSA's: it degrades into the oil and blocks the pickup. Beyond that, the diesel particulate filter and the EGR cooler behave as they do on any modern 2.0 diesel, and the high-pressure fuel pump is the common hard failure.
Do not read D4204T on a pre-2013 car as this engine. Volvo used the same designation for the Ford/PSA-derived 2.0 diesel in the C70 and S40 of the previous decade, which shares nothing with it.
