BMW XM
The plug-in hybrid performance SUV, and the only M car since the M1 with no combustion-only sibling. Its interest is the powertrain: a 4.4 twin-turbo V8 with the electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic, drawing on a 25.7 kWh usable pack — so unlike most plug-in hybrids the electric machine sits inside the gearbox housing, and a fault there is a transmission job rather than an axle one. High-voltage precautions therefore apply to work that otherwise looks entirely ordinary.
