Tata Zest
The saloon half of the pair that introduced Tata's own Revotron petrol engine, and the model where the marque's modern electronics start. It shares its platform, its engines and most of its faults with the Bolt hatchback, so a write-up for one is worth reading for the other.
The two engines come from opposite lineages and that decides the diagnosis. The 1.2 Revotron is Tata's own turbocharged three-cylinder petrol, barely documented in English; the 1.3 Quadrajet diesel is a Fiat Multijet built at Ranjangaon, so Fiat's common-rail conventions, part numbers and fault patterns apply to it directly. Establishing which is fitted decides which body of knowledge is relevant, and the badge on the boot is the only thing that says so.
The five-speed automated manual offered on the petrol is a clutch actuator on a manual gearbox rather than a torque converter: its complaints are actuator position and clutch temperature, they appear in stop-start traffic, and they read as gearbox failure to somebody expecting an automatic.
