If the engine is misfiring, ticking or running rough, stop driving and have it recovered. On these engines a valve out of step with its camshaft can wear the lobe flat within a short distance, which turns a solenoid replacement into a camshaft and lifter job. Check the oil level and condition — the system is actuated by oil pressure and low or degraded oil is a common cause.

Что означает этот код

The exhaust valve deactivation control circuit for cylinder 3 has a fault.

The circuit is electrically sound but the result does not match what was commanded.

This is the variant that most often means something mechanical. The module energised the solenoid, saw the current it expected, and then failed to observe the cylinder actually going quiet — usually inferred from crankshaft speed, which dips differently when a cylinder stops contributing.

So the electrical path works and the valve did not do as it was told. That points at oil pressure too low to collapse the lifter, a passage restricted by varnish, a blocked feed screen, or a lifter that has begun to seize. Performance codes are the ones to take seriously on oil condition.

Cylinder deactivation shuts down half the engine while you are driving, and the driver is not meant to notice.

Under light load — a level motorway cruise asks a large engine for a small fraction of what it can make — an engine wastes fuel pumping air it does not need. The throttle is nearly closed, so every intake stroke drags against a vacuum. That pumping loss is a real fraction of the fuel burned.

So the engine switches cylinders off: fuel and spark stop, and the valves are held shut. The remaining cylinders must then work harder to make the same power, which opens the throttle further and reduces the pumping loss for all of them. That is the whole gain — it comes from unthrottling the cylinders still running, not from the ones that stopped.

Both valves have to stay shut, and that is the part worth understanding.

If only the fuel were cut, the cylinder would keep pumping air — dragging on the crankshaft, and pushing cold oxygen through the catalyst, which upsets the mixture the oxygen sensors are trying to read. So the valves are held closed and the charge is trapped.

A cylinder full of trapped air becomes a spring. The piston compresses it on the way up and it pushes back on the way down, returning most of the energy. A deactivated cylinder is nearly free to carry — and that only works if the trap holds, which is why the intake and exhaust circuits are monitored separately and each gets its own code.

Almost all of these systems are actuated by engine oil, and that is why oil condition dominates the causes.

The solenoid does not move the valve. It routes oil pressure to a lifter that collapses, so the camshaft lobe pushes into a part that gives way instead of opening the valve. The oil is the working fluid, the signal path and the lubricant at once.

Which makes this system unusually sensitive to oil that a normal engine would tolerate. Oil that is old, overdue, of the wrong viscosity, or diluted with fuel is slower to move and more likely to leave varnish in passages narrower than a pencil lead. Low oil level does it too, because the pressure that holds a lifter in position falls away first at idle when it is hot.

So before condemning a solenoid: check the oil level, the oil condition and when it was last changed. On these engines that is diagnosis, not a preliminary.

There is a mechanical failure behind these codes that is worth knowing about, because it is expensive and it is common.

A deactivating lifter that does not re-engage cleanly leaves a valve out of step with the camshaft. The engine misfires on that cylinder, and the lobe riding an incorrectly loaded lifter can wear flat — at which point the repair is a camshaft and lifters rather than a solenoid.

A control-circuit code can be the early warning for it. Not always: an open circuit is usually just an open circuit. But a deactivation fault accompanied by a misfire on the same cylinder, or by ticking that changes with load, is a reason to stop driving and have it looked at rather than to clear the code and see whether it returns.

One cylinder, two circuits, and the corpus carries both. The intake and exhaust sides of the same cylinder are separate codes because they are separate solenoids doing separate halves of one job. Seeing only one of the pair does not mean the other is healthy — it means only one has failed a test so far. Check the sibling code for cylinder 3 while you are in there.
