Check whether your headlights actually work, in the dark, before driving anywhere at night. If one is out, the car is not roadworthy after dark and should not be driven until it is fixed.
Even if the lights still work, ask for the beam aim to be checked. This module usually controls the automatic levelling that keeps your beam out of oncoming drivers' eyes. If that has stopped, the beam may be sitting high and dazzling people — and there is no way to tell from the driving seat. That is a hazard to others rather than to you, which is exactly why it gets missed.
Look at the headlamp unit itself for misting or water inside. These modules live in the wettest, hottest corner of the car, and a lamp whose seals have aged lets moisture in that kills the electronics. If it mists up, that is the real fault and a new module fitted behind the same leaking seal will fail too.
Mention any front-end accident repair, however minor — everything in that corner gets disturbed.

This is the code in the block with the clearest road-safety consequence, and it deserves to be read as such: a vehicle whose headlamps do not work properly after dark is not roadworthy.
Headlamps acquired modules because they stopped being bulbs and reflectors. A modern unit may contain gas discharge ballasts or LED drivers, levelling motors that keep the beam out of oncoming drivers' eyes as the vehicle's attitude changes, cornering or swivelling elements, and on adaptive systems an array of individually switched segments that shape the beam around other traffic. All of that needs local control, so the lamp has a module — and losing it can take the lamp with it.
What actually happens varies and matters:
- Complete loss of that headlamp is the serious case, and it makes the vehicle immediately unroadworthy after dark.
- Loss of levelling leaves the beam wherever it last sat, which may be aimed high enough to dazzle oncoming traffic — a hazard to others rather than to you, and one you cannot see from the driving seat.
- Loss of adaptive functions, with the lamp reverting to a fixed dipped beam. Least serious, and often the actual outcome.
So the first question is simply whether the lights still work, and the second is whether anybody has checked the beam aim — the second is easy to skip because nothing about it is visible to the driver.
Physically, headlamp modules sit in the wettest, hottest, most vibrated corner of the vehicle, behind a lamp unit whose seals age and whose venting can admit moisture. Water inside a headlamp unit is a leading cause, and a lamp that mists up internally is reporting its own seal failure long before the electronics stop. Front-end accident repair is the other common route, since everything in that corner is disturbed.
