Что делать

The car may drive completely normally, or a particular system may refuse to work. The warning lamp is often the only reliable sign.

The most useful thing to know is that this is not a broken part, and buying one will not help. It means two or more of the car's computers are working fine and running software that does not belong together — a configuration problem rather than a hardware one, fixed by programming rather than by replacement.

Say what has been done to the car recently, because one of these is almost always the cause:

  • A control module replaced, particularly a secondhand one. A used module arrives carrying the settings of the car it came out of, and a matching part number is not enough — it still has to be programmed for your vehicle.
  • A software update or recall work that may not have completed.
  • Anything retrofitted — a towbar, a reversing camera, upgraded lights — which usually needs the car configured for it as well as wired.

This normally needs a dealer or a specialist with access to the manufacturer's calibration data, so a general garage with a code reader may not be able to resolve it however capable they are otherwise. That is worth establishing early rather than after paying for diagnosis.

And if you are considering a secondhand module to save money, read the point above first: many lock permanently to the first vehicle they are programmed to, so the part can turn out to be unusable rather than just awkward.

Что означает этот код

Modules on the vehicle are communicating normally and disagree about what they are part of.

This is the third thing that can go wrong on a vehicle network, and it is worth separating from the other two. A bus fault (U0001) means the wiring cannot carry the conversation. A lost communication code (U0100) means one participant has fallen silent. This one means everybody is talking, everybody is being heard, and the software they are running does not belong together.

The modules on a vehicle are a matched set rather than a collection of independent computers. Each carries a calibration written for a particular engine, gearbox, market, emissions standard and option list, and they are released in versions designed to work with each other. A module that is individually healthy can be entirely wrong for the car it is fitted to.

How vehicles get into this state is the useful part, because all four routes are avoidable and the first is the expensive one.

  • A replacement module from another vehicle. A used module carries the software and configuration of the car it came out of, and a matching part number does not settle it — the part number identifies the hardware, and what is programmed onto it is a separate question. This is the classic outcome of buying a module secondhand to save money, and the saving usually disappears, because it still has to be programmed to the vehicle. Worse, many modules lock themselves to a vehicle once programmed and cannot be reused at all, so the part may be unusable rather than merely inconvenient.
  • Programming that did not finish. Flashing a module takes a long time with the engine off, and a voltage dip partway through can leave it in an inconsistent state. This is exactly why programming is done with a battery support unit connected rather than on the vehicle's own battery, and skipping that is a common way to create this code while trying to fix another.
  • One module updated and not its partners. Manufacturers issue calibrations in matched sets. Updating a single module and leaving the others on their old versions is precisely the condition this code exists to report.
  • Equipment retrofitted without being configured. Adding something the vehicle was not built with — a towbar, a camera, different lighting — needs the modules told about it, not just the hardware fitted.

The consequence varies from nothing at all to a system that refuses to work, which makes the lamp the only reliable symptom.

The one thing that is consistent: no part will fix this. It is a configuration problem, and it is resolved by programming with access to the manufacturer's calibration data — which generally means a dealer or a specialist rather than a general workshop with a code reader. Money spent on components here is money wasted, and that is the failure this page exists to prevent.
