The cabin is suddenly much noisier
The car sounds coarser inside from one day to the next — more road roar, a harsher engine note — with nothing changed underneath and nothing to see. Modern cars cancel a great deal of noise electronically, playing an inverted version of it through the speakers, and some also synthesise part of the engine note you hear. When that processing stops, what you are hearing is what the car actually sounds like, and nothing is broken mechanically at all. It is worth knowing before anybody starts, because this complaint routinely buys an exhaust, a set of tyres or a wheel bearing that were all perfectly good.

What this usually means
Modern cars cancel a great deal of noise electronically, playing an inverted version of it through the speakers, and some also synthesise part of the engine note you hear. When that processing stops, what you are hearing is what the car actually sounds like, and nothing is broken mechanically at all.
It is worth knowing before anybody starts, because this complaint routinely buys an exhaust, a set of tyres or a wheel bearing that were all perfectly good. A car that became coarse from one day to the next, with nothing changed underneath and nothing to see, is describing a software or audio fault rather than a mechanical one.
The test costs nothing: does it change with the audio system? Active noise cancellation runs through the speakers, so a fault in the head unit, an amplifier, a microphone or the module's coding removes it — and a noise that appears when the stereo is off, or that changed when the head unit was replaced, is that.
A replaced or aftermarket head unit is the commonest cause on an older car. The cancellation and the engine sound enhancement both live in the audio path, so a unit fitted without the vehicle-specific interface removes both — and the owner attributes the new noise to the age of the car.
The mechanical causes exist and should be excluded second, not first: missing or damaged underbody trays and arch liners, a windscreen or door seal that has come away, and tyres changed for a noisier pattern. All three are visible, which is what makes them quick to rule out.
