Symptom

The cabin is suddenly much noisier

The car sounds coarser inside from one day to the next — more road roar, a harsher engine note — with nothing changed underneath and nothing to see. Modern cars cancel a great deal of noise electronically, playing an inverted version of it through the speakers, and some also synthesise part of the engine note you hear. When that processing stops, what you are hearing is what the car actually sounds like, and nothing is broken mechanically at all. It is worth knowing before anybody starts, because this complaint routinely buys an exhaust, a set of tyres or a wheel bearing that were all perfectly good.

Also described as: car is louder inside, more road noise, cabin got noisy, engine sounds louder than before, car suddenly noisy, noise cancellation not working,

What this usually means

Modern cars cancel a great deal of noise electronically, playing an inverted version of it through the speakers, and some also synthesise part of the engine note you hear. When that processing stops, what you are hearing is what the car actually sounds like, and nothing is broken mechanically at all.

It is worth knowing before anybody starts, because this complaint routinely buys an exhaust, a set of tyres or a wheel bearing that were all perfectly good. A car that became coarse from one day to the next, with nothing changed underneath and nothing to see, is describing a software or audio fault rather than a mechanical one.

The test costs nothing: does it change with the audio system? Active noise cancellation runs through the speakers, so a fault in the head unit, an amplifier, a microphone or the module's coding removes it — and a noise that appears when the stereo is off, or that changed when the head unit was replaced, is that.

A replaced or aftermarket head unit is the commonest cause on an older car. The cancellation and the engine sound enhancement both live in the audio path, so a unit fitted without the vehicle-specific interface removes both — and the owner attributes the new noise to the age of the car.

The mechanical causes exist and should be excluded second, not first: missing or damaged underbody trays and arch liners, a windscreen or door seal that has come away, and tyres changed for a noisier pattern. All three are visible, which is what makes them quick to rule out.

And a single new noise is a different complaint from a general coarseness — that belongs with the specific entries in this group.

Working through it

  • Coarse from one day to the next, nothing changed underneath

    Likely cause
Active noise cancellation has stopped — you are hearing what the car actually sounds like
    How to confirm it
Test whether it changes with the audio system on and off, and read audio and amplifier module codes.
    What fixes it
Repair the audio module, amplifier or microphone. Nothing mechanical is wrong.
  • Dates from a head unit replacement or an aftermarket fit

    Likely cause
Cancellation and sound enhancement both live in the audio path and went with the original unit
    How to confirm it
Establish what was fitted and when. This is the commonest cause on an older vehicle.
    What fixes it
Fit the vehicle-specific interface, or restore the original unit. See the infotainment entry in this vocabulary.
  • Underbody trays, arch liners or seals missing or damaged

    Likely cause
Mechanical rather than electronic — the sound insulation is physically absent
    How to confirm it
Inspect underneath and around the doors and screen. All three are visible, which makes this quick.
    What fixes it
Refit or renew the trays, liners and seals. Missing arch liners also throw water where it should not go.
  • Tyres changed recently

    Likely cause
A different tread pattern or compound — road noise varies enormously between tyres
    How to confirm it
Establish what was fitted and compare against the original specification.
    What fixes it
No repair. Consider the noise rating when replacing them next time.
  • Coarse only above a certain speed

    Likely cause
Aerodynamic — a seal that has come away, or a trim panel lifting at speed
    How to confirm it
Inspect the door and window seals and the bonnet's leading edge. This follows road speed rather than engine speed.
    What fixes it
Refit or renew the seal. See the above-a-certain-speed entry for the wider pattern.
  • One specific new noise rather than general coarseness

    Likely cause
A genuine mechanical fault — not this entry
    How to confirm it
Distinguish 'louder overall' from 'a new hum, tick or drone'. The latter has its own entry in this group.
    What fixes it
Diagnose the specific noise. This entry exists to stop general coarseness being treated that way.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
