U0238: Lost Communication With Digital Audio Control Module D

The car drives normally; expect the sound system to be silent or partly working.
Before an amplifier is replaced — and on a system like yours it is the expensive part — ask for two things.
Has the area around it been checked for damp? These amplifiers sit under seats or behind boot trim, which is where spilt drinks, wet feet and leaking rear light or tailgate seals end up. Water in the connector produces exactly this code with a perfectly good amplifier attached, and replacing it without fixing the leak simply ruins the next one.
And is it the amplifier at all? On most premium systems the audio modules are wired in a loop, so one broken link takes them all off the network at once. A list of audio faults is usually one connector, not a failed amplifier.
If a replacement does turn out to be needed, ask whether it has to be coded to the car. On these systems it almost always does, and one fitted without coding behaves exactly like a faulty one.
What this code means
The fourth digital audio control module has stopped being heard from. The distributed-audio and optical-ring reasoning is at U0237 and applies here unchanged.
What a fourth module tells you is that the system is a premium one, and premium audio brings a specific and expensive misdiagnosis worth heading off: the amplifier.
On these vehicles the amplifier is usually a large, heavy module mounted somewhere awkward — under a seat, behind a boot trim panel, in a wheel arch void — and it is both the most expensive part of the system and the one the code most readily seems to name. But its position is exactly why it is so often innocent. Under a seat it meets spilt drinks and wet feet; behind a boot panel it meets a leaking rear light seal or tailgate seal. Water reaching an amplifier's connector produces a lost communication code with a perfectly good amplifier behind it, and that is the connector-contamination pattern the corpus records elsewhere.
So the sequence to ask for is: find the module, look at its connector and the area around it for damp, and check the ring before the part is condemned.
The other thing a four-module system brings is coding. Replacement audio modules on premium systems very often need configuring to the vehicle — its speaker set, its ring position, its equalisation — and one fitted without that will not join the ring at all, behaving exactly like a faulty unit. That is the same trap the corpus records for engine and transmission modules, and it is more common here than anywhere else in the body network.
