Audi A7

The five-door coupé, and an A6 in every system that sets a code — 4G under the first car, C8 under the second — so A6 information is the information. What is worth knowing before diagnosing one is that it is heavily equipped by default, which changes where faults come from: adaptive air suspension on many cars, so ride-height and compressor codes are common, and a full complement of driver-assistance radar and camera modules whose calibration state is itself a fault condition after any windscreen or bumper work. On the 3.0 TDI the EGR cooler and the intake swirl flaps recur; on the supercharged 3.0 TFSI the supercharger's own coolant circuit and the timing chain tensioner are the items to check before anything else.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
