The 3.5 of the 6G72's family, SOHC or DOHC and on some versions with MIVEC, 186 to 280 hp — the Pajero and Montero Sport, the L200 and Triton, the Diamante and Magna.

Unlike the smaller engine, this one is an interference design throughout. A timing belt that breaks bends valves, so the service interval is not advisory here: it is the difference between a belt and an engine. The 6G72's SOHC reprieve does not extend to the 6G74, and an owner who has read that "the Mitsubishi V6 is non-interference" has read about a different engine.

Ignition coil degradation is reported alongside the family's shared faults.

All of them run a toothed timing belt, replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and a belt that has been left is the family's defining risk. Beyond that the recurring faults are shared: hydraulic lash adjusters that tick and fail on pre-1995 engines, valve cover gaskets that seep, carbon sticking the intake runners, and vacuum leaks at the intake manifold.
