Toyota Matrix
The tall hatchback on Corolla mechanicals, built at NUMMI in California alongside the Pontiac Vibe, which is the same car under a different badge — so Vibe material applies without qualification and Corolla material covers the engines and gearboxes. Worth knowing in both directions, because the population is split between two names and the writing with it. The XRS is the one to identify first: its 2ZZ-GE is the high-revving lift-cam engine and behaves nothing like the ordinary 1ZZ — different oil demands, a different failure profile, and a lift mechanism that generates codes the base car cannot produce. All-wheel drive was offered on the four-speed automatic cars only.
