Faulty charging coupler lock actuator
The small motor or solenoid that locks the charging cable into the vehicle's inlet has failed, jammed, or lost its position feedback.
The lock is a safety interlock first and an anti-theft device second, and knowing which explains the car's behaviour. A charging cable at full current carries more power than a domestic cooker ring, and separating live contacts draws an arc that pits the metal and can ignite the housing. So the car stops the current before it releases the lock, every time — and it will not start a session on a coupler it cannot confirm is secured.
Which is why a lock fault usually presents as a refusal to charge with nothing visibly wrong. The plug goes in, the car declines, and no amount of trying different charge points helps because the fault is on the vehicle.
The failure owners actually meet is the other direction: the cable trapped in the car. Nearly every vehicle provides a manual release for exactly this — a cable, lever or catch reached from the boot or under the rear seat, described in the handbook. It is worth locating before it is needed, since by then the car is attached to a charge point somebody else is waiting for.
Check the position sensor before replacing the actuator. The car judges the lock by what the sensor reports, so a sensor fault produces an identical refusal while the mechanism works perfectly — and that is a part replaced for nothing if the two are not separated first.
