Faulty vehicle speed sensor
The single sensor reporting road speed to the engine and transmission, as distinct from the individual wheel sensors. Losing it affects far more than the speedometer — shift scheduling, cruise control, power steering assistance and stop-start all depend on knowing whether the car is moving.
