P0574: Cruise Control System — Vehicle Speed Too High
What to do
Driveable. If this appeared without the car being driven quickly, mention any recent change of wheels or tyres — an incorrect rolling radius makes the vehicle believe it is going faster than it is.
What this code means
Cruise control was asked to operate at a speed above its permitted limit, or road speed exceeded that limit while engaged. Every system has an upper bound beyond which it disengages, and reaching it stores this code.
The interesting case is when it appears without the vehicle having been driven fast, which points at a road speed signal reading too high — a mismatched tyre size or final drive after a wheel change, or a speed sensor fault. Read the reported speed against a satellite navigation reading to settle it in a minute.
