P0503: Vehicle Speed Sensor A Circuit Intermittent/Erratic/High
What to do
Driveable but treat sudden harsh downshifts with caution, particularly at speed. Note whether the fault appears over bumps or in wet weather — both point at wiring rather than the sensor.
What this code means
The speed signal is dropping out or jumping. Intermittent speed signals produce alarming symptoms out of proportion to the fault: an automatic gearbox that briefly sees zero road speed at motorway pace may downshift hard or engage limp mode, and stability control can intervene when nothing is wrong.
A cracked sensor magnet and a chafed harness both do it. So does a connector that has taken water. Wiggling the loom with live data displayed while the vehicle is raised is far quicker than static measurement.
