P2161: Vehicle Speed Sensor B Circuit Intermittent/Erratic/High
What to do
Note when it happens — over bumps, at low speed, at a particular road speed, when cold. That pattern is the diagnosis on an intermittent fault, and nobody in a workshop can observe it for you. Ask for the sensor tip and its toothed ring to be inspected rather than the sensor simply replaced; metal debris on the tip is common and free to fix.
What this code means
The second speed signal is present but jumps, drops out or contradicts itself from moment to moment. This is the hardest member of the family to diagnose and the most likely to be met with a replaced sensor that changes nothing.
An intermittent signal is usually a mechanical problem wearing an electrical face. These sensors read a toothed ring turning past them, and the signal depends on a small, consistent air gap being maintained. Anything that lets that gap vary produces a signal that is fine at some speeds and ragged at others: a chipped or rusted tooth on the reluctor ring, swarf collected on a magnetic sensor tip, a worn bearing letting the ring move, or a sensor not fully seated in its bore.
The symptom pattern follows from that. A fault that appears only over bumps points at the gap or at the harness moving; one that appears only at low speed points at a signal too weak to read reliably, which is what a dirty or distant sensor produces; one that appears at a repeatable road speed points at a specific damaged tooth passing at a frequency the module cannot filter.
Those distinctions are free and the driver is the only person who can supply them, because the fault will very likely not appear in a workshop.
