P2158: Vehicle Speed Sensor B Circuit
What to do
The car will usually drive normally with the speedometer working. Worth repairing rather than ignoring — this sensor exists to check the other one, and without it a future drift in the primary signal will go unnoticed.
What this code means
A fault in a second, independent vehicle speed signal. Modern vehicles derive road speed from more than one place — a transmission output sensor, the wheel speed sensors feeding the braking system, sometimes a dedicated sensor — and compare them, because road speed is used by too many systems to be trusted from a single source.
That comparison is the point of having a sensor B at all. Its failure rarely stops the vehicle: the module falls back on the source it still trusts, and the speedometer usually keeps working. What is lost is the cross-check, and with it the ability to notice that the remaining source has drifted.
Worth knowing when a speed-related complaint has several stored codes: the corpus covers the transmission output sensor at P0720 and the primary vehicle speed signal at P0500, and a fault reported here alongside either of those points at something they share rather than at two sensors.
