Mention if an aftermarket or performance air filter has been fitted. Over-oiled filters contaminate this kind of sensor, and a replacement fitted behind the same filter fails again — so the filter matters as much as the sensor.

Ask whether the intake air temperature reading from the same unit is also wrong. These are usually one assembly, and if both channels misreport the fault is the unit or its connector rather than two separate things.

Expect no noticeable change in how the car drives. The engine falls back to safe assumptions, which costs a little economy and power rather than causing a fault you can feel.

Mention any oil in the intake pipework, which points at the breather system contaminating the sensor.

What this code means

The humidity sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but not credible.

Most drivers would not guess an engine measures humidity, and the reason it does is genuinely interesting. Water vapour in the intake air displaces oxygen and absorbs heat during combustion, which lowers peak flame temperature. That has two direct consequences the module can exploit.

  • Nitrogen oxide formation falls as humidity rises, because NOx is produced by heat. So a module that knows the humidity can trim exhaust gas recirculation more precisely rather than assuming a worst case.
  • Knock margin improves with humidity for the same reason, so a petrol engine can safely run slightly more ignition advance on a humid day.

Which makes a wrong humidity reading a quiet efficiency loss rather than a breakdown — the engine falls back to conservative assumptions and gives up a little economy and power.

The sensor is usually integrated into the intake air temperature or mass airflow assembly, so a fault here often means that whole unit. Check whether its temperature channel is also implausible — if both are wrong, the assembly or its connector is the fault rather than the humidity element.

Contamination is the characteristic failure. These elements are sensitive to oil mist and dust, so a leaking breather or an over-oiled aftermarket air filter genuinely poisons them — and a replacement fitted into the same intake fails the same way.
