P015E: Excessive Time to Enter Closed Loop Fuel Timing Control
What to do
Say what kind of journeys the car does. If most are short and around town, the engine may simply never get warm enough to satisfy this check — nothing is broken, and a longer run will often clear it.
Try a sustained half-hour drive before the appointment if you can, and report whether the light went out. That single observation separates a usage pattern from a fault.
Say whether the temperature gauge reaches its normal position, since a thermostat stuck open prevents the engine warming and causes this directly.
Ask whether any oxygen sensor heater faults are stored, because those are the commonest genuine cause and this code is then the consequence rather than the problem.
What this code means
The fuel timing control loop took longer than allowed to start working from sensor feedback.
Closed loop means the module is correcting from measurement rather than following a table. Until the loop closes, fuelling runs open loop — an educated guess from stored maps — which is deliberately rich, deliberately conservative, and deliberately temporary. This code says the temporary state lasted too long.
The loop cannot close until its inputs are trustworthy, and each precondition is a candidate:
- The oxygen or air-fuel sensors must reach operating temperature, which needs their heaters working. A weak heater is the commonest single cause, and it usually declares itself with its own code.
- The engine must reach a minimum coolant temperature, so a thermostat stuck open can prevent closed loop indefinitely.
- The sensors must produce a plausible, moving signal. One stuck mid-range never satisfies the entry test.
Usage is a legitimate cause and should be eliminated before any part is replaced. A vehicle that only does short cold journeys may genuinely never satisfy the conditions, and nothing is broken.
The consequence is real even though the car drives normally. Extended open loop means extended rich running, which costs fuel, loads the catalytic converter and, on a direct injection engine, washes fuel past the rings into the oil.
Read the stored codes first. A heater or thermostat code alongside this one is the fault; this is the consequence.
