P016A: Excessive Time To Enter Closed Loop Air/Fuel Ratio Control

What to do

Have the battery and charging system checked if that has not been done recently. The sensor this fault concerns has a heater that draws real current to reach temperature quickly, and a weak battery or a poor earth slows it enough to cause this — with nothing wrong with the sensor at all.

Say what kind of journeys the car does. Mostly short, cold trips can produce this on a healthy vehicle.

Try a sustained half-hour run before the appointment and report whether the light cleared. It is genuinely useful information.

Say whether the temperature gauge reaches its normal position, since a thermostat stuck open prevents the engine reaching the temperature this check requires.

What this code means

The air-fuel ratio control loop took longer than allowed to start working from sensor feedback.

This is the mixture-control counterpart of the fuel timing entry code, and on most engines it is the more consequential of the two — air-fuel ratio control is the loop that decides how much fuel goes in, so time spent outside it is time spent running on a stored estimate.

Wideband sensors are the usual subject here, and they behave differently from the older narrowband kind in a way that matters. A wideband air-fuel sensor must be at operating temperature to produce any meaningful signal at all — it does not degrade gracefully when cold, it simply produces nothing usable. Its heater is therefore not an accessory but a precondition, and it draws significant current to reach temperature in seconds rather than minutes.

Which makes supply quality a genuine cause. A tired battery, a poor earth, or high resistance in the heater circuit slows warm-up enough to fail this test without the heater itself being faulty.

So check charging and earths before condemning a sensor here, particularly on a car that has had battery trouble or bodywork done.

The other candidates are the family's: a thermostat stuck open holding coolant temperature below the entry threshold, a sensor aged past usefulness, or a driving pattern of short cold journeys that never satisfies the conditions.
