What to do

Ask for the fuel filter's age first. A restricted filter is the commonest cause of this and by far the cheapest to put right — worth eliminating before anything larger is considered.

Do not keep driving it any longer than necessary. On a modern diesel or direct injection engine the fuel lubricates the high pressure pump, and running it short of pressure accelerates its wear — a fault that starts as a filter can end as a pump.

If the engine has recently had fuel system work, mention it. Air drawn in at a union or a filter housing is compressible and stops a pump building pressure, and it is a common consequence of a filter change that was not primed properly.

Expect reduced power or a limp mode, which is the vehicle protecting itself rather than an additional fault.

What this code means

The fuel pressure control has commanded everything it can and the pressure is still below target.

Modern high pressure fuel systems regulate by controlling how much fuel the pump compresses, not by dumping the excess — and this code says that control has reached its stop. The pump is being asked for everything it has and the rail is still short.

Because the demand side is at maximum, the fault is on the supply side, and that narrows the list usefully:

  • A restricted fuel filter, which is the cheapest and most common. Worth doing first on any vehicle with an unknown or overdue filter history.
  • A weak lift pump failing to feed the high pressure pump adequately, so it cavitates rather than compresses.
  • A worn high pressure pump, where the piston and bore no longer seal.
  • Internal leakage — a pressure control valve passing, or injectors returning far more than they should.
  • Air in the supply, which is compressible and defeats a pump entirely. A leaking union, a perished hose, or a filter change done without priming will do it.

Distinguishing pump wear from a supply restriction is the measurement that matters, and it is made by checking the low-pressure feed while the fault is present rather than by inspecting the pump.

Do not keep driving it. Low rail pressure means poor lubrication inside the pump, which accelerates the wear that may already be the cause.
