P018B: Fuel Pressure Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance
What to do
Ask for the actual fuel pressure to be measured with a gauge rather than read from the sensor. This code can mean the sensor is wrong, but it can equally mean the pressure genuinely is — and low feed pressure damages the high pressure pump, which is a much bigger repair than the sensor.
Ask when the fuel filter was last changed, since a restricted filter is a common cause of genuinely low pressure here.
If you can smell fuel at any point, say so immediately. These sensors sit in the fuel line and a weeping seal is both a cause of this fault and a fire risk.
The car may drive normally, but do not ignore it — the consequence of leaving genuinely low feed pressure is pump damage.
What this code means
The second fuel pressure sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but not credible.
Sensor B on most vehicles is the low pressure side, measuring the feed between the tank pump and the high pressure pump — which makes this code different in character from the rail pressure codes it sits near. The rail runs at hundreds or thousands of bar. The low pressure side runs at a few.
The cheap and decisive check is at rest. With the engine off and the system depressurised, this sensor should read close to atmospheric and should agree with every other pressure sensor on the vehicle. One that reports a plausible running pressure on a car that has stood overnight has declared itself without any road testing.
Where the sensor agrees at rest and disagrees running, the pressure may genuinely be wrong — and that is the more important outcome, because low feed pressure starves the high pressure pump and damages it. A restricted filter, a tiring lift pump or a partially blocked strainer all read exactly like a faulty sensor from the module's point of view.
So do not treat this purely as a sensor code. Measure the actual pressure with a gauge before deciding, because the expensive failure this can precede is a high pressure pump destroyed by inadequate feed.
Check the connector for fuel and corrosion. These sensors sit in the fuel line, and a weeping seal contaminates the connector while also being a fire risk worth reporting.
