P020A: Cylinder 1 Injection Timing
What to do
Mention any recent injector or fuel system work, including who did it. Modern diesel injectors carry a calibration code that has to be programmed into the engine module when they are fitted, and an injector installed without that step produces exactly this fault — the repair is a coding job rather than a part.
Say whether the engine is rough only when cold, or all the time. Rough only when cold points towards a glow plug or compression on that cylinder rather than the injector, and that distinction saves real diagnostic time.
It is worth attending to reasonably soon. Mistimed injection on one cylinder raises stress on that piston and can foul the particulate filter with unburnt fuel, so a modest repair now is cheaper than what follows it.
What this code means
Injection timing on cylinder 1 is not where the module commanded it to be.
This is a per-cylinder code, and that is the whole point of it. A common rail engine does not simply open all its injectors together — it commands each one individually, and modern control modules can tell when one cylinder's combustion is happening earlier or later than the rest.
How the module knows is worth understanding, because it decides what to check. It infers timing from the crankshaft's instantaneous speed: each combustion event gives the crank a measurable kick, and the angle at which that kick arrives tells the module when the fuel actually burned. So this code is derived from crank behaviour rather than measured at the injector.
Which means two very different things can set it.
- The injector on cylinder 1 is genuinely opening late or early — worn, sticking, or fitted without its calibration code being programmed in.
- Cylinder 1 is not producing the expected kick at all, because compression is low or the glow plug is not helping it light on a cold morning. The timing is fine; the evidence is missing.
A single-cylinder code points at that cylinder. The same code on every cylinder points at something shared — rail pressure, the timing chain, or the crank sensor's reference. Read the whole stored list before touching anything.
Check the injector's calibration coding first if any injector work has been done. It costs nothing and it is a common cause.
