The most consequential single signal on the engine: it establishes engine speed and crank angle, and without it there is no spark timing, no injection timing and no misfire detection. Characteristically fails with heat rather than outright, producing a car that cuts out warm and restarts once cooled — a pattern routinely misdiagnosed as a fuel pump.
