Mention if the engine is slow to warm up or if the heater takes longer than it used to. That fits a bypass stuck in the cooling position and helps confirm the diagnosis.

Ask for the intake air temperature sensors to be checked from cold before the valve is replaced. The module often works out this fault from temperature readings rather than from the valve directly, so a faulty sensor produces it with a good valve — and that is a much cheaper repair.

Worth doing sooner rather than later. A bypass stuck cooling in damp weather can allow water to collect in the intercooler, and an engine that draws in a slug of water can be seriously damaged.

What this code means

The valve that routes charge air around the intercooler is not behaving the way the module expects.

A bypass exists because cold charge air is not always what you want. Cooling the intake charge raises density and suppresses knock, which is the whole purpose of an intercooler. But on a cold engine it works against you — it slows warm-up, keeps combustion temperature down when the catalyst needs heat, and can encourage condensation in the intake tract. So the bypass routes air around the cooler until the engine is warm.

Range/performance means the valve moved but not correctly. It responded slowly, stopped short of the commanded position, or the intake temperature downstream did not change the way a working bypass would have made it change. This is not an open or shorted circuit, which sets a different code.

The module often infers this from temperature rather than from a position sensor, which creates a specific trap: a faulty intake air temperature sensor produces this code with a perfectly good valve. Verify the temperature readings agree with each other from cold before condemning the actuator.

Condensation is the failure mode worth naming. A bypass stuck in the cooling position on a cold, damp day can let water collect in the intercooler, and an engine that ingests a slug of it can suffer serious damage — which is why this is worth fixing rather than living with.
