P0475: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A
What to do
Usually driveable. If the car feels strangled or lacks power at higher revs, treat it as more urgent — a valve stuck closed restricts the exhaust in the same way a blocked filter would.
What this code means
A fault in the exhaust pressure control valve — a butterfly in the exhaust that deliberately restricts flow. Two quite different systems use one. On commercial diesels it is an exhaust brake, providing retardation on descents. On many modern diesels it is a warm-up aid: restricting the exhaust raises engine load and exhaust temperature, which brings the engine and its after-treatment up to temperature far faster in cold weather.
Soot and corrosion seize the spindle, which is what most of these faults are. A valve stuck closed is the serious case, because it restricts the exhaust permanently.
