P04B5: Fuel Fill Door Stuck Open

What to do

Ask where this car's manual fuel door release is, usually a small cable or lever inside the boot near the rear light. It is worth knowing regardless of this fault — it is what gets you fuel if the door ever refuses to open.

Ask for the hinge, latch and any release cable to be checked before the actuator is replaced. Ice, road salt or a bent hinge stop a door latching, and those are much cheaper than a motor.

In the meantime, be aware the fuel tank is not secured, which is worth considering for where you park.

Take care in car parks and narrow spaces — a filler door standing open catches on pillars and hedges and bends easily.

The powered fuel filler door is not closing when commanded.

A filler door that the vehicle controls electrically is a recent addition to most cars, and it exists for more reasons than convenience. It is locked with the doors, which deters fuel theft and siphoning; it is held shut while the vehicle is moving; and on vehicles with a sealed fuel tank it will not open until the tank has been vented, so the driver is not met by a rush of pressurised vapour.

Stuck open is the less serious of the pair — the vehicle can still be refuelled — but it is not trivial.

  • The tank is no longer secured, which matters for theft and for insurance.
  • On some vehicles the door being open inhibits functions or produces a persistent warning.
  • A door standing open is easily damaged by a car park pillar or a hedge.

Check the mechanical side before the electrical one, because it is commoner and cheaper. Ice, road salt, a bent hinge or a strained release cable all stop a door latching, and none of them is an actuator fault.

Where the actuator genuinely has failed, note that on many vehicles it is a small motor built into the door assembly rather than a serviceable part — so ask what is actually being replaced before agreeing.
