P050A: Cold Start Idle Control System Performance
What to do
Say whether the engine idles unevenly or dips for the first thirty seconds or so after a cold start, then settles. That is exactly the window this fault covers and it is the most useful thing you can report.
Ask for the throttle body to be inspected and cleaned. Carbon build-up restricts the small airflow a raised cold idle needs, and it is a common, inexpensive cause.
Ask whether the coolant temperature sensor has been checked. If it reads warm when the engine is cold, the whole warm-up strategy is never properly invoked — the engine is healthy and the module simply does not know it is cold.
It matters more than it feels. Most of a car's harmful emissions come out in the first minute, so this is an MOT and emissions issue even though the car drives normally once warm.
What this code means
The engine did not hold the raised idle speed the cold-start strategy asked for.
This code belongs to a family that only exists for the first minute of a journey, and understanding why makes all seven of them readable. A catalytic converter converts nothing until it reaches around 300°C. On a cold start it is at ambient — so most of a modern petrol car's entire trip emissions are produced in the thirty to sixty seconds before the catalyst lights off.
Manufacturers therefore run a dedicated warm-up strategy whose only purpose is to get exhaust heat into the catalyst as fast as possible: ignition timing is retarded heavily, which dumps energy out of the exhaust valve instead of into the crankshaft, and idle speed is raised to push more hot gas through the converter.
This code says the raised idle was not achieved or not held.
The causes are the ordinary idle-control ones, but they show here first because cold start is when the demand is highest:
- A carbon-coated throttle body, which restricts the small airflow a raised idle needs.
- An unmetered air leak, which the module cannot compensate for cleanly when cold.
- A coolant temperature sensor reading warm, so the strategy is never fully invoked. The engine is fine; the module thinks it is already warm.
That last one is worth checking early, because it is cheap and it silently disables the whole family.
