P050B: Cold Start Ignition Timing Performance

What to do

Ask what else is stored before this is treated as its own fault. The engine deliberately retards ignition on a cold start to heat the catalytic converter, and it will refuse to do that if it does not trust its timing or knock sensors — so another fault is often the real cause.

Mention when the spark plugs were last changed. Worn plugs make combustion marginal exactly when the strategy is asking most of it, and that alone can produce this.

Say whether the engine sounds rough or hunts for the first few seconds from cold. That is the window this covers.

Worth fixing even though the car drives normally warm — most of a car's harmful emissions are produced in that first minute.

What this code means

The ignition timing retard the cold-start strategy commanded was not achieved.

Retarding the spark on a cold start looks like the opposite of tuning an engine well, and it is deliberate. Firing late means combustion is still happening as the exhaust valve opens, so heat leaves through the exhaust port instead of pushing the piston. That is exactly what a cold catalytic converter needs — the engine deliberately runs inefficiently for half a minute to light it off.

The retard is substantial, often far beyond anything used in normal running, which is why the engine sounds and feels different for the first few seconds.

This code says the module could not apply it, or applied it without the expected effect.

Three things commonly prevent it:

  • The module's timing authority is limited by another fault. A camshaft-to-crankshaft correlation problem, or a knock sensor fault, makes the module conservative — it will not add large retard when it cannot trust its position reference.
  • The engine will not run with the retard applied. Worn plugs, weak coils or poor fuel make combustion marginal, so the strategy backs off to avoid stalling.
  • The coolant temperature reading is wrong, so the strategy is never properly invoked.
