What to do

Have the battery load tested rather than voltage tested. This module draws very heavy current to run the glow plugs, and a battery that reads a healthy voltage at rest can still collapse the moment they switch on — which is exactly what this fault describes.

Ask for the battery terminals and the main earth connections to be cleaned and checked. Corrosion matters most where the current is highest, and this is one of the highest-current circuits on a diesel.

Mention if the fault appeared in cold weather. That is characteristic rather than coincidental — the plugs work hardest and the battery is weakest at the same time.

Expect hard starting and white smoke on cold mornings until it is fixed.

What this code means

The glow plug control module's supply voltage is outside its acceptable range.

This is a supply code rather than a glow plug code, and the distinction saves a lot of unnecessary work. The module may be entirely healthy and the plugs perfect — it is simply not being fed properly, and everything it does while starved is unreliable.

Glow plug supplies are unusually demanding, which is why they fail this way. Four to six plugs each drawing heavily at switch-on means the module handles very substantial current, and its feed is correspondingly heavy: a thick cable, a high-rated fuse or fusible link, and a solid earth.

Every one of those is a candidate:

  • A tired battery or poor terminals, which sag under the glow load specifically. A voltage that reads fine at rest can collapse the moment the plugs energise.
  • A corroded main earth, which raises resistance where the current is highest.
  • A degraded fuse or fusible link connection, which heats and worsens.

Measure the supply while the plugs are actually being commanded, not with the ignition merely on. This is a load fault and a static measurement will not find it.

Cold weather is when it shows. Glow plugs run longest and hardest at low temperature, and the battery is weakest then too — so a fault that appears in the first frost is characteristic rather than coincidental.
