Speedometer reading incorrectly or not at all
The speedometer is dead, stuck, or reading a speed that does not match reality. Rarely arrives alone, because the same road speed signal feeds the transmission's shift scheduling, cruise control, stability control and speed-sensitive steering — so the useful thing to report is everything else that started misbehaving at the same time. That combination identifies a single failed input far faster than the speedometer alone.

That combination identifies a single failed input far faster than the speedometer alone.
A speedometer that is dead with harsh shifting, no cruise control and a stability lamp is one sensor, and treating it as four faults is how a straightforward job becomes a long one.
The signal usually originates at a wheel speed sensor or a transmission output speed sensor, depending on the vehicle, and is distributed over the network. So the fault is either at that sensor, in its wiring, or in the module that publishes the value — and reading which modules still see a plausible speed narrows it immediately.
A reading that is wrong rather than absent is a different population. Non-standard tyre or wheel sizes change the relationship between wheel rotation and road speed, and a car fitted with larger wheels reads slow by a predictable percentage with nothing broken at all. That is worth excluding before any part is considered.
And a speedometer is legally required to read accurately within defined limits in most jurisdictions, so a car reading substantially wrong is an inspection failure as well as an inconvenience — and one reading low is the version that matters, because the driver is travelling faster than they believe.
