P0785: Shift Timing Solenoid A

What to do

Expect changes that feel wrong while every gear is still there. That combination — right gears, bad changes — is characteristic, and it is worth stating explicitly rather than describing it as the gearbox generally being poor.

What this code means

A fault in the solenoid that controls shift timing rather than gear selection. Where a shift solenoid decides which gear, this one influences how the change happens — the rate at which a clutch fills and the overlap between one element releasing and the next applying.

So its failure produces a transmission that still selects every gear correctly and makes a poor job of getting to them. Changes that bang, flare or take noticeably longer than they used to, with the gears themselves all present and correct. That signature is distinctive enough to be worth recognising, because a gearbox that has all its gears rarely gets suspected of a solenoid fault.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
