P0780: Shift Error
What to do
Expect changes that are harsh, slow or missing altogether. Ask what other codes are stored — if there are any, this one is most likely their consequence rather than a separate problem, and repairing them should clear it.
What this code means
A commanded gear change did not complete as expected. This is the behavioural counterpart to the solenoid codes rather than an alternative to them: where P0753 says a particular valve failed electrically, P0780 says a shift failed, without naming what caused it.
That makes it the least specific code in the block, and it should be read accordingly. P0780 rarely arrives alone, and when it appears alongside a solenoid, speed sensor or pressure control code, the other code is the finding and this one is the consequence. Diagnosing P0780 first, on its own terms, means investigating a symptom while the cause is sitting in the same list.
Where it genuinely does arrive alone, the order set out under P0730 applies: verify the speed sensors, then fluid and pressure, then the solenoids, and only then anything internal.
