P0856: Traction Control Input Signal
What to do
If the car has lost power for no apparent reason and the traction control light is on, mention both together — a stuck torque reduction request explains a gutless engine that is otherwise perfectly healthy, and looking only at the engine will not find it.
What this code means
The signal by which the stability and traction control system asks the engine and transmission to cooperate is faulty. Understanding what that signal does explains both of this code's very different symptom patterns.
Traction control cannot grip the road itself. When it detects a wheel spinning it does two things: applies that wheel's brake, and asks the engine to make less power — because braking a wheel the engine is still driving hard is a losing battle. It also asks the transmission not to change gear mid-intervention, since a shift in the middle of a slip event is exactly the wrong moment for a torque interruption. That request is this signal.
Lose it in one direction and traction control cannot reduce torque, so it disables itself rather than intervene with half its tools. Lose it in the other and the engine sees a permanent request for reduced power — a car that has become gutless with no engine fault, no misfire and nothing wrong in the fuel or air systems. That second case is the one worth knowing about, because the search naturally starts at the engine and the answer is not there.
