P0D36: Hybrid/EV Battery System Current Low
What to do
The car will feel flat — slower acceleration, weaker regenerative braking. It is drivable. If it only happens in very cold or very hot weather, that is the pack protecting itself and not a fault.
What this code means
The current flowing in and out of the traction battery, taken as a whole system, is outside its expected range.
This is a system-level code rather than a sensor code, and the distinction decides where to look. The sensors at P0AFB and P0B0E measure current at particular points. This one is the conclusion drawn from all of them together — the module has added up what it knows and the total does not make sense.
A system code with no sensor codes beside it is the interesting case, because it means every individual measurement is plausible and only their combination is wrong. That points at something between the measuring points: a connection, a cable, or a load nobody is measuring.
Low system current usually means the car is limiting itself rather than failing. A pack that is cold, nearly empty, nearly full, or too hot will restrict how much current it allows in either direction — that is normal protection, described at P0CA6 for the cold case. This code says the restriction happened when nothing should have caused it.
So the question is what the pack believed about itself at the time, which is why the temperature and state-of-charge in the freeze frame matter more here than the current figure does.
