P0D5A: Proximity Detection Circuit A Intermittent/Erratic
What to do
The car may refuse to move because it believes a charging cable is still connected — check the port is empty and the flap is closed. It may also refuse to charge. Neither is dangerous, but the car will not be persuaded until the circuit is repaired.
What this code means
The proximity detection circuit is faulty.
Charging uses two signal pins, not one, and they answer different questions. The Control Pilot (P0CF3) negotiates with the supply: is there power, how much current may be drawn, may charging begin. Proximity reports on the cable.
It works through a resistor in the plug, whose value states what current the cable is rated to carry — a thin cable and a heavy one look identical to the car otherwise, and drawing 32 amps through a 16-amp lead would heat it until something melted. So proximity is the mechanism that makes a cheap cable safe rather than dangerous.
Its second job is the one that surprises people: it is what stops the car driving away while plugged in. The resistance changes when the release button on the plug is pressed, giving the car a moment's warning before the cable comes out — and giving it certainty that a cable is still attached. Which means a proximity fault can immobilise a car with nothing plugged into it, because the car believes it is tethered. That is a genuinely alarming symptom with an unalarming cause, and it is the single most useful thing to know about this circuit.
The signal comes and goes. Found by moving the harness and connector with the reading live, not by a static resistance measurement — an intermittent that can be measured at rest is not intermittent any more.
